Pour Laurent Raspaud Richard Clare “Rick” Danko 29 décembre 1942 – 10 décembre 1999 Rick Danko s’est éteint il y a bientôt dix ans. Il était, avec Levon Helm (batterie), l’une des deux voix lead du combo canadien The Band, trop souvent confondus avec Bob Dylan qu’ils ont aidé à prendre un tournant résolument plus rock. Rick Danko, né de parents ukrainiens, était, comme tous les musiciens de The Band, un multi-instrumentiste émérite (fiddle, piano, basse, contrebasse, guitare… entre autres). Il fût un bassiste remarquable, peu technique mais mélodique, groovy et posé comme l’était McCartney. Il est finalement peu connu qu’il explora le premier (en tout cas avec succès et bien avant Jaco Pastorius, bien qu’un océan de notes sépare les deux musiciens, Rick Danko déclarait au magazine Guitar Player en décembre 1976 : “I mean, I don’t play bass, I just cover space” – Je veux dire, je ne joue pas de la basse, j’occupe l’espace) les possibilités de la basse fretless (dépourvue de barrettes ou “frettes”, comme la contrebasse), lorsqu’il abandonna sa Fender Jazz Bass pour une Ampeg AUB‑1, instrument à lutherie raffinée, très “violonesque”.
